Welcome back, beauty-loving friends! Today I am bringing you a review on the new Maybelline Tattoo Brow Gel Tint that was recently released in Australia. Does it work? Is it worth the money? Does it actually save time in the mornings? Read on to find out…
According to the Maybelline Australia website, the tattoo brow “is a game-changing, peel-off gel-tint that leaves brows perfectly defined and evenly filled for up to three days”. It is enriched with royal jelly and aloe vera to help condition brows as well as tint them. The brow tattoo is available in four shades: Light Brown, Medium Brown, Dark Brown, and Grey Brown. I have the shade Medium Brown (when I bought the product only Light or Medium Brown were available).
The product retails for $24.95 AUD but I bought it for half price as an introductory offer. There is only 5 mL of product in the bottle, which is pretty small. In terms of affordable makeup, I think it is on the steeper side, but it’s also not too surprising a price considering the cost of “affordable” makeup in Australia.
The application process is very straightforward. You paint the product on, leave for a set amount of time, and then peel off. Done!
The applicator is a little brush and the product itself is like a gel, it’s not super watery or runny in texture. It is pretty easy to apply and not too messy, so that’s a plus. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to get clean lines with the applicator but it went OK. If you did make a mistake you could easily clean it up anyway. Overall, the application process was straightforward and easier than I thought it would be. I think this product would be fine for beginners to use.
I did have a little difficulty in peeling the product off the first time I used this product (when I left it on for 20 minutes). The second time I used it (when I left the product on for much longer), it was a lot easier and cleaner to peel the product off.
I have trialled this product twice, with varying results.
The box suggests leaving the product on for 20 minutes and then peel off. I followed these directions but found the product quite difficult to peel off – it wasn’t very clean, and I honestly think I took out some of my actual brow hairs! The effect was immediate right away, with my brows looking tinted and more filled in. Yippee! The following day my brows looked great and didn’t need any extra product. However, by day two the product was definitely faded and I needed some tinted brow gel just to help things along. By day three, the tint was gone, so that was pretty disappointing. My first impressions were not the best.
When I started writing this blog post I consulted the Maybelline Australia website, where it says for maximum results, leave the tint on for about two hours. This is a huge difference from what the packaging recommends, which I do not understand. Nevertheless, I had to try it out again, this time leaving it on for longer as per the website. I left the product on for about two hours and then peeled it off. The product was much easier to peel off this time around. My brows looked a little darker than the first application as well. I had the same experience with day one – they looked great alone. Day two required some brow gel, but they still looked pretty good. Even by day three this time they looked alright – they had definitely faded, but certainly not as quickly as the first application.
I will add that the brand suggests not using cleanser for 24 hours after applying this product. This was difficult for me to do as I wash my face morning and evening. The first application I didn’t take much care with my cleansing and skin care, but the second time around I did try to be more careful around the brows. This also could have contributed to them lasting a bit longer on the second application.
Overall, I do like this product. I like that it tints your brows as well as filling in those sparse areas – like a proper brow tattoo. I do think the Dark Brown or Grey Brown would be a better match for me. Being darker, these shades may last a little longer. At the very least, I think they’d be a better match for my natural hairs. Medium Brown is a little on the warm side, especially as it is fading. I wish there was more of a colour guide on the packaging because it is a little difficult to pick your shade just based on the packaging, and in-store swatches of this product are not entirely helpful.
I’m not sure how many uses you are meant to get from this little bottle, so it’s hard to say whether the product is really worth the money. I would definitely pick this up again if I ever saw it on sale. I’m not sure I’d pay full price for this product.
It looked great on the first day, and I didn’t need to use any extra brow products, which was good. By the second day I found myself wanting to add a little tinted brow gel just to even things out. This sort of defeated the purpose of the tattoo brow, as ideally I’d like to be able to use it without any extra help for at least two days.
If you are someone who has to spend forever filling in your brows every morning, you will probably like this product. For me, I don’t mind my natural brows, and most days of the week I just use a tinted brow gel over them. This product didn’t save a whole lot of time for me as I was still needing to use brow gel more days than not. For someone with really sparse brows, it may be more worthwhile. In saying all that, my brows definitely looked better with this as a base and some brow gel over top. So even though it didn’t change my routine, it did make my brows look more put together than usual for those days.
Have you tried this product before? Are there similar products out there on the market that you think are better? Let me know!
