If you are addicted to Instagram, Pinterest, and reading beauty blogs like me, you probably would have seen the trio of clay masks that L’Oreal recently released. Of course, I had to pick one up while Priceline had 40% off skincare and see what all the fuss was about!
There are three clay masks to choose from:
~ The charcoal mask that detoxifies and brightens
~ The eucalyptus mask that purifies and mattifies
~ The red algae mask that exfoliates and smooths
I picked up the charcoal mask because I wanted something that would work on cleaning out my T-zone and particularly my nose (where I have enlarged pores and more oil production). I am mildly allergic to eucalyptus so steered clear of that one, and the red algae mask just didn’t appeal to me as I do not like to over-exfoliate my skin.
These masks retail for $19.99 AU each for 50ml of product. As I mentioned, I bought mine with 40% off from Priceline.
Now, on to the good stuff! This mask is made up of three pure clays (kaolin, montmorillonite, and ghassoul) with added charcoal to detoxify and brighten the skin. You can read more about the properties and benefits of the three masks on the L’Oreal website. The charcoal mask is dark grey in colour and has a thick texture. It has quite a strong floral scent that I found lingers on the skin after it has been washed off. It may not appeal to people who are sensitive to perfumes, especially if applying to the nose. My skin can get a little sensitive sometimes and this mask did sting slightly when applying the mask – not every time, but once or twice in the time I have been using it. Most facial masks containing clay or charcoal cause my skin to sting a little, but the irritation ends there.
This mask dries down and hardens/cracks on the skin, which I love – it feels like the mask is really working. What I really loved about this mask was the fact that I could visibly see results right away. While the mask was drying on my skin, I could see the oil from my pores – it was absolutely disgusting and grossed everyone out including my boyfriend, but I knew it was working! My pores looked much smaller after washing off the mask. This mask claims that results will be noticeable after 1 day, but that maximum results can be seen after 7 days. I use this mask three times per week and I have been using it for about three weeks now. My pores definitely seem smaller and less congested where I have been applying the mask.
A little goes a long way with this mask so I feel it will last me a good amount of time (especially because I am just applying to my nose or T-zone as opposed to my entire face). The packaging is sleek and sturdy as well. Overall, I highly rate this charcoal mask from L’Oreal. I haven’t tried much skincare from the brand, but I was impressed with the effectiveness of this mask, and I would repurchase it.
