Introducing my holy grail foundation: the Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation!!! I cannot quite describe my joy at having finally found a foundation that works beautifully on my skin, is the correct shade, wears well throughout the day, and is relatively affordable. I had resigned myself to a life of BB creams and tinted moisturisers – I’d had such bad luck with foundations in the past. This product has changed all of that for me. Keep reading to learn why…
About the product
The Healthy Mix Foundation comes in a 30mL bottle and retails for $29.00 AUD from Priceline (it’s also available in Ulta, on ASOS, on the Bourjois website, or in Boots). It is an anti-fatigue foundation that claims to “boost radiance from within through its vitamin therapy formula”, which includes vitamin C, vitamin B5, and vitamin E. This foundation has a natural glow to it, but nothing over the top – it looks very natural. It claims to last for 16 hours and though I haven’t tested it for that long, I have worn it for about 12 hours and it does last very well throughout the day on my skin (for reference, my skin is pretty normal. It can get dry in the cooler months and a little oilier in the warmer months. It has some fine lines appearing and the occasional breakout, but is otherwise quite well behaved.).
Why I love it
Firstly, the shade match. There are actually not too many shades offered in the range unfortunately, but the lightest shade available Light Vanilla is a perfect match for me (for reference, though I’ve never actually used a MAC foundation, shade matching online tells me my skin is around NC15). I love that this has a neutral undertone – it isn’t too pink, despite my skin being on the cooler side. Sometimes super fair foundation with pink undertones ends up making me look really unhealthy, so I do prefer something with a neutral undertone to it to bring some life to my skin.
Ease of application
Secondly, this foundation is the easiest product I have ever applied. It is so quick, I can hardly believe it. With other foundations I have had to buff the foundation in for so long to get it to look natural on my skin, rather than just sitting on top of my skin in patches (this happened no matter the primer or tool I used). The Healthy Mix blends out so quickly and looks flawless instantly – I don’t have to work for it like I had to with other foundations. I prefer using a brush to apply this foundation personally. It takes about 20 seconds to blend it out to perfection, so it’s perfect for every day wear (though I also love wearing this on a night out, as there is no added SPF in it, meaning it looks great in flash photography).
Healthy Mix offers a light to medium coverage, which I prefer. I am definitely not a full coverage girl, so this is perfect for me. However, this foundation is buildable, and you can definitely layer it to add coverage. Concealer works really well over this foundation as well.
Performance with other products
This foundation performs well with different primers I have tried, ranging from moisturiser, to silicone primers, and luminous primers which are a bit tackier on the skin. It also performs well with pressed or loose finishing powders (though it dries down quite well and doesn’t transfer easily, so sometimes I feel like it doesn’t even need to be set).
Packaging & Scent
There is a scent to this product, but I find it really nice and fresh, and it disappears as soon as you apply it. Apparently this product has been reformulated recently, and I’ve heard that the original formula had a very overpowering scent that did linger. They must have changed this aspect of the formula though, because I can tolerate the scent fine.
I also really like the packaging – it’s in a glass bottle with a plastic pump and cap – there’s really nothing to complain about there.
All in all, this foundation ticks every possible box for me, and that is why it has become my holy grail foundation in just a matter of weeks. I can’t see myself living without this product, so I’ll definitely be repurchasing it!
