Welcome back everyone! I’m starting the week off with a good old fashioned high end vs drugstore comparison. These products are not necessarily “dupes”, but they do the same thing and are very comparable. Let’s see if the Models Prefer Retractable Eyebrow Pencil can stand up against the famous Benefit Cosmetics Goof Proof Brow Pencil!
What they are…
Retractable eyebrow pencils! This means you do not need to sharpen them, they wind up. This is my preferred type of eyebrow pencil – even though it means that sometimes you don’t get as crisp or sharp a line, it’s just so convenient not having to sharpen these pencils. Both of these pencils have a spoolie on the end, which is a must-have for me as well!
I’ve said before that it is what’s on the inside that counts, but I’d be lying if I said luxe packaging doesn’t suck me in like a sucker. The Benefit brow collection was redesigned last year and is now sleek and silver and I love it. It is beautiful, and I love using these products in my Instagram photos because they just look so darn good. In comparison, the Models Prefer brow pencil is very plain looking, and it ain’t as cute in a photo.
The Benefit Goof Proof pencil is designed to be, well, goof proof. It has a unique shape to the pencil and is quite firm when applying, meaning it is really difficult to make a mistake. Filling in your brows with this pencil does take a little longer, but the end result is flawless. The Models Prefer brow pencil is a much softer product, so filling in your brows takes no time at all; however, the risk of overdrawing or making a mistake is far greater with this pencil. It also doesn’t look as natural as the Benefit pencil either, but it definitely does the job!
Both pencils claim to be waterproof, and I do find they both last well throughout the day (however I also always set my brows with a brow gel, so that could have something to do with it as well). The Models Prefer brow pencil comes in 3 different shades, and the Benefit pencil comes in 6 different shades. The Benefit pencil definitely matches my brows better and looks a lot more natural.
*Quick note: I have coloured blonde hair (but am naturally brunette) and I use the shade Medium in the Models Prefer and 02 Light in the Benefit (but could definitely also use shade 03 Medium).
The spoolies on these pencils are also totally different. The Benefit spoolie is really small, soft, and gentle to use. The Models Prefer spoolie is much harsher and actually hurts my sensitive skin when I use it to tidy up my brows after applying product.
There is a huge difference in price with these pencils. You get basically the same amount of product in each pencil. The Benefit Goof Proof currently retails for $42.00 through Sephora Australia (or Myer, David Jones, Adore Beauty). The Models Prefer retails for $10.99 at Priceline.
Overall, the Benefit brow pencil is my personal favourite of the two – and it ought to be with that price tag! I cannot fault this product. It has beautiful packaging and the product is amazing to use. The price is ridiculously high for a brow pencil though, there is no denying that. I got mine in a Christmas pack with a few other Benefit brow products which made it slightly more affordable, but I’m definitely tossing up whether I can justify re-purchasing this product once it runs out.
The Models Prefer pencil does the job, and the price is much better for me. Although the shade range is not as good, the margin for error is larger with this softer product, the packaging is not as luxe as the Benefit, and the spoolie is a bit harsher, it is still a fine product to use. I have repurchased this pencil a few times before just because it is so affordable and handy to have around.
So, that’s it! Have any of you tried these brow products? What did you think of them? Leave me a comment down below – I love to hear from you all!
Until next time,
