Welcome back to my ULTIMATE FAVOURITES post – my 2017 beauty favourites! If you’d like to read 2016’s ultimate favourites, you can do so here. These are my top products in every category for the entire year of 2017: the best of the best. Settle in, because this is going to be a loooong post.
Winner: The Ordinary High-Adherence Silicone Primer
I got this primer earlier in 2017 and have been using it religiously ever since. It works well with every foundation I have tried it with. My skin looks flawless and the longevity of whatever foundation is used over top is definitely boosted. That price tag is just the cherry on top as well. When my skin is dry, this works. When it’s more oily, this works. It is brilliant.
Runner-Up: Mecca Max Bring on Bright Illuminating Primer
This little primer is fantastic. It is so perfectly glowy, and gives the skin a lit-from-within look to it. It never looks greasey. It’s pretty inexpensive, the packaging is cute, and it smells like fresh green apples. The reason why this didn’t take top prize is simply due to the fact that not everyone wants a glowing primer, and some days I didn’t want that particular base (especially with my skin becoming more oily towards the end of the year). The Ordinary primer is much more universal and wearable for everyone on any occasion.
Winner: Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation
I have a whole blog post dedicated to this foundation, which you can read here. I dubbed it my holy grail foundation, so it would be remiss of me not to include it here in top spot. This foundation was my number one this year, plain and simple. It ticked all the boxes for me: shade match was pretty good, coverage was light to medium, didn’t feel heavy or look cakey, wasn’t too unreasonable in price. It provides a glowy finish, which I just adore; however, as mentioned above, my skin type changed after stopping the contraceptive pill in the last half of the year. Since then, my skin has been more on the oily side, meaning I couldn’t use this foundation as much (so devastated) because I just ended up looking too shiny.
Runner-Up: Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation
My runner-up foundation (and probable winner for next year, I’m calling it now) is the Maybelline Matte + Poreless. I never would have picked this foundation in the past (I wanted to try the Dewy + Smooth formulation) but with my shine coming through with all my beloved dewy foundations and BB creams, I knew I needed to try something different. This foundation is medium coverage, has a perfect shade match for me, and blends beautifully with a damp beauty sponge. It lasts well throughout the day and I think it does minimise the appearance of my pores. It is matte initially but I find that my shine does start to show throughout the day, but it’s not as bad as with a BB cream or dewy foundation. I don’t mind it at all, but people who want SUPER MATTE foundation may be disappointed in this. The only negative I have to say about this foundation is the packaging – it doesn’t have a pump dispenser, which I dislike.
Winner: Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer
Sorry to be boring and repetitive, but this concealer has done it again. It took out top spot in 2016 and here it is again. I ran out of this concealer during 2017 and tried using others but I just had to go back to this one. It is a perfect shade match, it sits beautifully underneath my eyes, it covers blemishes reasonably well, and it’s well priced. The only problem I have is finding this concealer as it is always out of stock! It’s extremely popular, and for good reason. I love it.
Runner-Up: Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer
There really is nothing that comes close to the Maybelline concealer for me, but for the purposes of having a runner-up, here it is. The Wake Me Up concealer is nice, it’s just a bit too yellow-toned for me. It works really well under the eyes and I have no complaints there (other than the slight yellow tone). This does not cover blemishes very well, which I guess is okay, considering it’s really meant for brightening and highlighting. I would certainly purchase this again, but maybe only if the Maybelline concealer was to be discontinued. Just sayin’.
Winner: Rimmel Stay Matte Setting Powder
This is a cult classic and I’m sure everybody and their dog has already tried this powder out. If you haven’t, you should. It’s affordable and lightweight and does a good job of setting my liquid products down. I don’t think it keeps me matte but I don’t mind that. I think people with all skin types can use this powder – I used it when I had drier skin and loved it just as much.
Runner-Up: Maybelline Shine Control Loose Powder
This is an old favourite that I have repurchased many times – I also featured it in my 2016 Beauty Favourites. I love this powder so much – it is my go-to for a night out or special occasion. It feels like a luxury product but it is so affordable. Again, I still have shine peeking through even if I use this “shine control” powder but it’s not a big deal for me.
Winner: Essence Satin Touch Blush: Satin Love
This was such a difficult decision this year – I had so many blushes that I used consistently throughout the year. These Essence blushes take top prize though based on their sheer affordability – these babies are about $5.00 AUD a pop. They have the perfect amount of pigment, they last the whole day, the shade range is pretty good, and I love the embossed detailing on the pans. I own the Satin Touch Blush in Satin Love as well as the Matte Touch Blush in Berry Me Up!. I reached for Satin Love a lot more as it is super neutral, goes with everything, and I do prefer that satin finish over the matte. In saying that, the Matte Touch is gorgeous and I highly recommend both formulas!
Runner-Up: Benefit Galifornia
This blush is GORGEOUS and I am obsessed with it. Benefit slays the packaging as always – this is by far my favourite Benefit box packaging. I love the embossed detailing this pan has as well, and it smells really nice too! This blush is my go-to summer blush and I have been wearing it constantly lately. It was so close to being my number one, but it is far more expensive (which I take into account), so it ended up being my runner-up. If you have the budget for this blush and want to treat yourself, I highly recommend this shade.
Winner: Revlon x Chloe Morello Sculpt and Highlight Kit
I know this is technically a contouring palette but the bronzer/contour shades in this palette were my absolute favourites in 2017. Whenever I wanted to glam up, or had a special occasion, it’s this palette I chose over my “high end” products. The formula is so soft and creamy, blends beautifully, and matches my skin tone. The yellow setting powder and highlighter in this palette are also amazing.
I usually mix the two bronze/contour shades together to use on my forehead and cheekbones. I love using these powders as eye shadows too. This is an excellent palette, 10/10 Revlon and Chloe Morello!
Runner-Up: Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer
This bronzer is reaaaally hyped up, and it took me forever to get my hands on it because it is always sold out. I saw it one day and jumped on it as I thought it would be amazing. My first impressions were a little disappointing, I’m not going to lie. It’s not overly pigmented, which means you need to build it up. At first I didn’t like this, but I grew to love it. I can use this for any occasion – subtle, every day looks or full glam – and it just works. It’s a lovely shade, compared to most of my other bronzers it’s on the cooler side so it really goes well with my fair, cool toned skin. It smells like coconuts and I love the pattern on the pan. The packaging is not my favourite as it is quite bulky, but that’s a small detail. Even though it is drugstore, it’s not all that cheap in Australia, which is something to keep in mind. It is a lovely product though and I’m glad I finally got to try it. I used it lots this past year.
Winner: Too Faced Sweet Peach Glow Highlighter
There was really no contest in this category… I mean, how can you beat something that smells like peach lollies?! You really can’t. This palette, and in particular the champagne highlight shade, was a staple in my beauty routine in 2017. The peachy highlighter provides such a smooth sheen to the face – it isn’t chunky or glittery at all. I love it so much. The blush and bronze shades are also nice, but it was often just the highlighter that I would reach for. I wish they made this highlighter available separately because I would be all over that.
Runner-Up: ColourPop x Sonya Esman Here Comes The Sun Super Shock Palette: Summer Bonfire
Another highlighter in a palette! Unfortunately this palette was limited edition and is no longer available so I feel bad even mentioning it BUT what I really love about this highlighter is the formula anyway. If you don’t already own a Super Shock highlighter from ColourPop, you need to change that! It’s a beautiful cream-to-powder (ish) formula that just melts into your skin and looks so natural. You apply it with your finger, so it is quick, easy, and perfect for travel. The shade is a lovely light golden champagne, and even though you cannot get this particular shade anymore, ColourPop have lots of amazing shade options in this formula. I cannot rave about it enough!
Winner: Tarte Tarteist Lash Paint
I got a sample of this mascara back in May and even though it has expired and I haven’t been able to replace it yet, it still takes top prize after just a few months of use. I expected to hate this mascara once I saw the wand, but I was sorely mistaken. I’m not sure what it is about this mascara but it made my lashes look absolutely amazing for hours on end. They didn’t droop, the mascara didn’t flake or smudge, and it was relatively easy to apply. I definitely need to purchase a full size of this mascara when I go to Sephora next. It is incredible.
Runner-Up: Maybelline Lash Sensational
This was such a close call, honestly I almost want to make this category a tie. This mascara is amazing and I have already repurchased it. The wand is so unique and makes applying the mascara a dream. I start with the shorter bristles to thicken and then the longer bristles to fan out and lengthen. I also use the longer bristles on my lower lashes and it’s so easy to apply and get right to the root. My lashes look fanned out and lifted and there is no mess. This formula is on the drier side, which I love. It’s also a bit more affordable (especially when it’s on sale).
Winner: Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow
I went without this brow gel for so long and I fell back in love with it in 2017. I tried staying away because it is pricey for such a small thing, but I got it in a pack at the start of the year and haven’t looked back since. It is the perfect brow product in my opinion. For more glam looks, I use a pencil or powder and then this over the top. It does an excellent job of setting the brows down and keeping them tidy, while also filling in some gaps and making my brows look full. Mostly though I use this gel on a day-to-day basis just on its own when I’m going to work. You really don’t need any other product with it because it fills in and adds colour to your brows in one step. It’s so quick and easy and I love the result it gives. I cannot live without this product now. I did a comparison blog post on this product with a cheaper alternative, so if you’re interested in reading that, you can do so here.
Runner-Up: Models Prefer Brow Kit
For occasions when I wanted to do a full face of makeup I would turn to this little set to fill in my brows. I used the powder side throughout my brows and then the pomade right on the ends to get a sharper finish. This was easy to use and didn’t fade. It’s affordable and I like the packaging too – it’s travel friendly. The powder is a bit powdery and you do get some kickback but I don’t mind that too much for the price.
Winner: Too Faced Melted Matte Liquid Lipstick in Sell Out
This was the standout lip product of 2017 for me by a long shot. I first came across this shade when I got my makeup done as a Beauty Loop perk at Mecca Maxima earlier in the year – the makeup artist used this shade on me and I instantly fell in love with it. I got it for my birthday shortly after that and I have worn it out on so many special occasions so it does hold a special place in my collection now. The shade is neutral yet on the bolder side, so it is perfect for me. I don’t like anything too bright or over the top, but I also don’t want to look washed out. The formula is easily the most comfortable I have tried as well. I am really not a fan of wearing liquid lipsticks for very long (I don’t even really enjoy some bullet lipsticks either). I just hate my lips feeling dry. This lipstick feels like nothing on my lips and it lasts so well, I barely need to touch up at all. I highly recommend this formula of lipstick!
Runner-Up: Lanolips Tinted Lip Balm – Rose, Nude, Rhubarb
Most of the time I just wear lip balms – this is what I wear to work and on the weekends too. This is my favourite lip balm though because it provides a bit of colour and a gorgeous glossy finish. It also has SPF in it! This literally ticks every box for me: it’s comfortable and nourishing, it’s protective, but it’s also tinted and glossy, so can complete a makeup look and make you look really put together. Big thumbs up from me!
Winner: Stila Matte ‘N Metal palette
This palette is just so pretty. I have heart eyes every time I look at it. I think this is the most expensive palette I own, but it is so worth it. The packaging and mirror are so luxe and the shades scream my name. I can create so many beautiful looks with this palette without needing to think. It has everything I could ever need. The mattes are gorgeous, smooth, and blendable, and the metallics are stunning. I love using this palette and always bring it out for special occasions because it’s just so fancy. If you haven’t tried Stila eye shadows yet, I highly recommend them!
Runner-Up: Zoeva En Taupe palette
I really loved the cool tones in 2017, so I reached for this palette a lot. This is my first Zoeva product and I am impressed. It’s affordable and the shadows are such good quality. I love the lighter metallics in this palette – I use them all the time in my inner corner. I also love the cool taupes and purples this palette has to offer. This is one of the only cool toned palettes I own so it does stand out in my collection. I’m glad I have it and I definitely want more Zoeva palettes now.
Winner: Tarte Ready, Set, Radiant
This setting spray is so unique. It’s almost oily in formula and when you spray it on your face it isn’t wet like most setting sprays. It’s so bizarre how this works but it just does. It smells like cucumber and I find it really refreshing. Even with my skin getting oilier I have continued to use this spray and it works well on both dry and oily skin I have found. The packaging is nice too – it’s really sturdy. I just love this product because it is so different – sometimes setting sprays seem all the same to me, but this one truly is different in formula and finish.
Runner-Up: Rimmel Insta Fix + Go Priming and Setting Spray
I really like this new setting spray from Rimmel – I have used it constantly since it came out. The fresh scent is lovely and I love the way it really sets my makeup and makes it last throughout the day. I was a bit iffy on the nozzle at first as it does drip a bit and sprays out in a focused way, not a fine mist. I got used to it though and now I really love this spray. As it is affordable I have been dousing myself in it daily, reserving my Tarte spray for more special occasions.
Aaaaand that’s it! Phew! We made it! If you made it through this whole post, I applaud you. I hope you all had an amazing year.
