Today I am saying goodbye to 2016 and documenting my absolute favourite beauty products of the year! These products have been my Ride or Die products of 2016, I can’t wait to share them with you. I’ve taken inspiration from Jaclyn Hill’s Ride or Die Makeup Tag on YouTube – I didn’t want to forget any categories! Here we go…
Primer: Garnier BB cream + Blur
I absolutely love BB creams, and often prefer them to a foundation on most days, as I prefer the feel of them on my skin, and I don’t look for a lot of coverage anyway. I can wear this alone, or as a primer under CC creams or foundations. It’s beautiful, it really smooths out the skin and makes it look flawless. It’s the perfect blend of a moisturising BB cream and a silicone-feeling primer.
Foundation: L’Oréal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Foundation / Chi Chi Super BB Cream with Caviar Extract & Collguard
As I mentioned earlier, I wear BB cream instead of a foundation almost every day. I have been using the Chi Chi BB cream for awhile now and I absolutely love it. It offers the perfect amount of coverage for me, and the colour is great for my skin (I use Fair or Light). It’s SPF 30 and feels so nourishing on the skin. Cannot rave about this product enough. In terms of actual foundation, True Match definitely takes the top prize in 2016. I find it difficult to find affordable foundations that really match my pink undertones, but True Match lives up to its name and delivers the perfect colour for me (1.R/1.C Rose Ivory) while also being a sheer (yet buildable) coverage, which I prefer (I hate feeling cakey). I use a Real Techniques sponge to blend this into my skin, and it’s so lightweight and comfortable to wear.
Concealer: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Treatment Concealer
Much like foundation, I haven’t had a whole lot of luck finding concealers that I really like. I feel like concealers are so huge in the beauty community on Instagram and YouTube, with everyone applying so much concealer under their eyes and somehow still looking flawless. If I apply that much concealer, I look 50 years older. It’s not nice. So, instead of trying to fit in with a trend that just doesn’t work for me, I now just use a very small amount of concealer on the inner third of my under eye area, just to brighten and conceal some darkness. This concealer doesn’t sink into any lines or dry patches, and it blends out really well. Other concealers I have tried in the past still managed to sink into lines that are barely visible when I don’t wear makeup, which just made me look older. This concealer doesn’t do that, so it’s my new holy grail beauty item.
Face Powder: Maybelline Shine Free Loose Powder
I really wanted to try the Laura Mercier powder this year, but alas, my purse said no. Maybe next year. Until then, this powder is my holy grail, I use it religiously. It’s finely milled and feels beautiful on the skin. Although the name of the product suggests it will be mattifying, I don’t find it to be overly so, which is fine with me. Once I have the Laura Mercier powder I’d like to be able to properly test the two and see if the Maybelline powder is a possible dupe (I feel it might be!). I prefer a loose powder over a pressed powder, as I feel it provides a more air-brushed finish to my skin.
Blush: Urban Decay Afterglow 8 Hour Powder Blush in the shade “Fetish”
I received Nars “Orgasm” blush for Christmas, and I think that will become my new favourite for 2017, but for 2016, my favourite blush was “Fetish” by Urban Decay. This shade is one of the most neutral in the range, but it has more of a mauve pink tinge to it once you open the product and swatch it. It is matte and the powder is so fine and soft, it’s a dream to blend out, and it does last a good amount of time. I really like neutral blushes that go with any eye or lip look. This blush is beautiful, and I love the sleek packaging too.
Bronzer: Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer in Medium/Deep
Okay, I think this one wins the ultimate beauty product for me in 2016. I love this bronzer. I love its beautiful gold packaging, I love its chocolate scent. It is matte and it blends beautifully and the colour is gorgeous and I cannot say enough good things about it. I am quite pale, and this isn’t even the lightest shade of bronzer they have, which impresses me greatly. This can be built up if I have fake tan on too. Love it. Live for it. Going to be buried with this bronzer.
Highlight: The Balm “Mary-Lou Manizer”
We all know this one. Every person and their dog has this highlighter and digs it. It’s beautiful. It blinds you. It’s pretty affordable. The packaging is cute. It’s sort of hard to find (in Australia, at least) because it’s always sold out — for good reason. This is a cult classic, and it was my go-to highlighter of 2016 when I wanted to dazzle.
Mascara: Urban Decay “Perversion” mascara
This was a tough one for me. I love mascara. For years, I only used L’Oréal mascaras as well. They were my safe go-to mascara from the drug store. But this year, I branched out and got a sample size of the Urban Decay “Perversion” mascara and I have not looked back since. I love this all-rounder mascara because it does everything. It gives me length, volume, and darkness, without being clumpy or messy. I love it! Considering it’s only slightly more expensive than the L’Oréal mascaras I was using, I’m so glad I decided to try this!
Brow Product: Essence “Make Me Brow” Eyebrow Gel Mascara
In short: “Make Me Brow” is just like “Gimme Brow” by Benefit, but cheaper. Much, much cheaper. This is another product that is hard to find as it is always sold out. Whenever I see it in stock, I grab a handful. There are only two shades (light and dark) and I use both, depending on how intense I want my brows to look. I use this product over the top of powders, pomades, and pencils to set, but I also often use it alone, just to give the brows some colour and volume on “no makeup” makeup days. I love “Gimme Brow” but just couldn’t justify the price tag this year, so “Make Me Brow” saved 2016 for me. I cannot live without it.
Lipstick: Lipstick Queen “Frog Prince” lipstick
This was tough as well. I never used to like lipsticks, I found them really uncomfortable to wear, so it was only this year that I started building up my collection. I bought a few different lipsticks this year, but I think my favourite has to be “Frog Prince”. It’s colour changing and oh so fun (green in the tube, but turns the perfect shade of pink on your lips, like a mood ring, but better). It’s really moisturising and feels more like a lip balm than a lipstick. The only downside to this product is that it isn’t the most long-wearing lip product I own, and it can dry out my lips if I reapply too often. However, the colour, the (initial) comfort, and of course, the fun of the colour change, makes this my favourite lipstick of 2016.
Liquid Lipstick: BH Cosmetics Liquid Lipstick in the shade “Samantha”
This product really was my favourite lip product of 2016. It was all about the liquid lip this year, and this formula is hands down my favourite. It is long lasting and so comfortable to wear. The price is amazing as well! I cannot say enough good things about this brand, I really urge you all to check them out if you haven’t already! “Samantha” is that perfect pink mauve colour that was so in this year. I also have the shade “Glory” which is a classic red, and I love that just as much. Highly recommend!
Eyeshadow Palette: Too Faced “Natural Eyes” Neutral Eye Shadow Collection
You can’t go wrong with neutrals. This palette is compact and has everything you could possibly need for versatile day and night looks. I chose this palette as my favourite of 2016 as I’ve had it the longest (purchased at the start of the year) and therefore I have used it way more than my Pretty, Fun, and Fearless palette (which I am obsessed with). For the first half of 2016, this palette was my go-to, and I still love it, I’ve just been using newer palettes more recently. I can also use this palette to fill in my brows, due to the good range of matte brown shades.
Setting Spray: Urban Decay “All Nighter” Setting Spray and Maybelline Master Fix Wear-Boosting Setting Spray
I couldn’t pick just one! I love both, but I love the affordability of the Maybelline setting spray. Setting spray is something I use after every single makeup application. I hate feeling cakey or powdery, and a spray gets rid of that feeling for me. Because I use this product so much, something affordable (yet still amazing) really wins me over. However, I had to mention the Urban Decay spray because it is so effective and feels amazing on the skin. I use the Urban Decay before a special event, and the Maybelline spray on a day-to-day basis. I’ll repurchase both again!
